Park Fair will face challenges with renovation

Posted on June 8, 2007 in Around the metro by DM

A report that Park Fair Mall on Des Moines’ north side will get a $2.5 million facelift in hopes of attracting a big-box retailer is great news, but frankly seems overly optimistic to me.

Just down the street, at Des Moines’ second-busiest intersection, a Florida developer has been working for more than ten years to get a big boxer to anchor the redevelopment of the former Eastgate area at E. 14th & Euclid, but so far no one’s taken the bait. Granted, the new strip center at Eastgate anchored by Tires Plus is better than the eyesores that were removed from that area, but the development was originally supposed to include so much more.

I have no earthly idea who the Denny Elwell Company thinks is going to invest in a long-term commitment to Park Fair (though as a nearby resident, I look forward to someday eating these words).  The last major renovation for Park Fair took place in the mid-80’s, when developer Irv Gilbert transformed it with a very attractive interior after decades of enduring that weird translucent green roof.

Update: follow-up article to plan unveiling
