Celebrating Dad

Posted on June 19, 2007 in Personal thoughts by DM

We had a lovely father’s day weekend here, motorcycle “bike night” on Friday and then a little shopping excursion on Saturday as the DD and I gathered our materials to celebrate on Sunday. My husband’s birthday was on Monday the 18th as well, so he managed to extend the “It’s All About Dad” event for most of the weekend plus Monday.

Gifts were a book, My Men Are My Heroes by Brad Kasal, chrome headlight and passing lamp bezels and hand levers for his bike, and a pair of shorts and a leather belt.

The wrapped presents were secondary… the real gifts came later - first when his oldest daughter from the previous marriage, who lives in Oregon, called with the news that she had passed her finals and earned her Masters of Science degree at long last. This is a gift in two respects - first, she’s come a long way in her education, not having attended college right after high school. And second, she hardly ever calls. This is, I think, the first time in four years that she has acknowledged her dad’s birthday or even Father’s Day. I’m not sure why, and neither is he. But it’s been painful for him. Later, his now-middle daughter brought her whole family to the house for a barbecue, where we grilled steaks and enjoyed Waldorf salad. He chatted by phone with his dad, who lives out of state, and I spoke a few times with my dad, who was working all day on a photo shoot. Then on Monday, DH’s birthday, he took our daughter to the local amusement park for some daddy-daughter time.

In all it just felt like a less-rushed, happier celebration than we’ve had in a long time, and I was grateful for all of it.
