Shoppes at River Bend by Neighborhood Development Corp. thrives

A new commercial development along Sixth Ave., the Shoppes at River Bend, is in my neck of the woods and I’ve been so pleased to drive by regularly and watch it take shape. What started out as a 120-year-old crumbling building has been revitalized - fixed up and expanded - into a thriving business development by Neighborhood Development Corp., a group that’s been focused on housing issues in that area since 1999.
An article in today’s Register notes that interest in the commercial spaces is high:
A second phase of the Sixth Avenue project should be completed by August. It has 22 businesses on a waiting list for four commercial spaces, she said. The third and final phase will have room for four more stores, bringing the total to 13 businesses along what had once been an unattractive block of broken windows, weeds and battered buildings.
I worked for the City of Des Moines in the early 1990’s and at that time this area was trying to bounce back from years of decline. Since that time, new and refurbished housing along the Sixth Ave. corridor has gone in, long-neglected buildings have been removed or - as in this case - re-established, and people are moving back in. It’s a diverse area that deserves a fresh start.
