Des Moines Arts Festival, sure - but much more happening June 29-July 1 in Greater Des Moines

It’s time for the 10th Annual Des Moines Arts Festival, June 29-July 1 in downtown Des Moines! (See our Wednesday post about street closings downtown for getting around info.) And if it’s Arts Festival time, it must also be time for “that other art show,” ArtFest Midwest, June 30-July in the Varies Industries at the Iowa State Fair grounds. Of course, If art and crafts just aren’t your thing, there’s lots more going on Greater Des Moines this weekend.
Try these other events happening June 29-July 1.
East Village Bike Night - June 29
Beaverdale Garden Walk - June 30
Des Moines International Airport 75th Anniversary Open House - June 30
AViD Visiting Author series featuring Chip Kidd - June 30

The open house at the DSM airport was fun. I got to meet personnel from the Iowa Air National Guard, climb into a Boeing/Vertol CH-47 twin-rotor helicopter, walk onboard a KC-135 aerial tanker, see a Piper business jet prototype, take a look at a Sikorsky Blackhawk helicopter operated by the U. S. Army (the only branch of the armed forces where pilots don’t have to be commissioned officers–just warrant officers) and more. I also watched a quarted of F-16 fighters take off on the northwest-southeast runway–they were loud! Too bad the show didn’t receive much press–perhaps the centennial of the airport will do better.
Joel, I’m glad to have a report from one of the other events - thanks!
