Where did this third adult come from?

Posted on July 1, 2007 in Parenthood by DM

I could tell a growth spurt was coming on, because my daughter was going through a phase of eating large meals. It has never failed in the past: she’ll go through a couple weeks of “eating big,” and suddenly all her jeans will be too short.  And true to form, I’ve noticed in just the past couple of weeks that she’s suddenly about half an inch taller than me.

I always hoped she would surpass me in height, if only so she wouldn’t have to spend her life hemming every pair of pants she ever bought. And I always predicted that she would be taller than me by the time she was in 7th grade. By whatever miracle of observation, I was right. She completed 7th grade a month ago, and now I’m looking ever-so-slightly-up into her eyes.

It’s kind of funny to actually recognize that she’s not really a kid anymore, scurrying around the house. She is a full-sized person, like a third adult, walking around… occupying more space… and the house seems smaller. (It also seems a little more dramatic… we are starting to get some of the teen drama going on, but nothing rebellious or major.)

I’ve long been fascinated by the physical process of her growth. There’ve been actual marked moments when I realized she no longer looked like a baby, but like a toddler; then no longer a toddler, but a “kid;” then no longer a “kid,” but a young lady. And this week, I’ve been noticing how much she resembles an actual adult.

Make no mistake, I miss my little girl but I do not long for more children or for the pitter-patter of little feet. Instead, I look forward to watching her grow intellectually, and to seeing what this amazing girl will achieve as a woman. I expect to be looking up to her, in more ways than one, in the years to come.

And why is it that the kids seem to grow faster during the summer? Is it because summer always seems to go faster so they are growing at the same pace - but its the calendars fault. Or, do they simply grow up more when the sun is shining?

LOL Amy I have no idea, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the sun had something to do with it. I do hope she gets at least a couple more inches on me, I’ve been short my whole life and it’s kind of a pain in the p’toot! LOL Thanks for visiting, by the way, and welcome! ~ Janet
