Keep your cool without air conditioning!

I’ll admit it, I’m spoiled. While this year we managed to wait until well into June before turning on the air conditioning, I can’t recall living in a house without it - except for about 8 months back in 1989. And yes, they were the hot months. I remember that one of the ways we used to keep cool was to get into a lukewarm shower, then gradually turn the water cooler and cooler until it nearly took your breath away. This was done at the end of the day, shortly before bed time, so the day’s sweat and dirt were washed off and so going to sleep would be much easier.
Sarah over at Natural Living Des Moines offers some great tips for keeping the house cool when you don’t have air conditioning or need to save energy.
I’ll add one of my own tips for keeping cool outdoors. We’re headed over to the Fairgrounds this weekend for the GoodGuys Rod & Custom Heartland Nationals, where we’ll spend the weekend sitting around custom cars in our lawn chairs. It’s going to be hot - it’s always hot for this show - so we’ll take plenty of clean terry rags to soak in the cooler and wear on the backs of our necks… or even, perhaps, flat over the tops of our heads. Look silly? You bet. But it keeps us upright when we’re sitting out in the heat.
