July 4 visit to Thomas Mitchell Park

Here’s a link to our July 4 photo album.
A lot of times, holidays other than Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to slip by us undetected and largely uncelebrated. Not because we don’t care, but because we aren’t organized enough to commit to a plan.
This year I was determined we were going to “do something” on the 4th, and a picnic sounded like a good idea. We decided that the menu would consist of fried chicken from a bucket and grilled hot dogs, plus chips and fruit. So we loaded the cooler, made a quick pass through the grocery store (grabbing the LAST package of house-brand hot dog buns - whew!) and drove out to Thomas Mitchell Park in southeast Polk County.
Lots of folks were using the park, which was nice to see… we did find a good picnic table under a large shade tree, and within half an hour we were enjoying our outdoor feast. Following clean-up, we decided to go on a hike using the trail loop in the park.
Here is a bit of advice: “moderate” difficulty on a walking trail apparently means lots of steep inclines and declines. I’m not sure what “advanced” would consist of, but it based on today’s “moderate” experience it must mean you need to bring repelling equipment. We are used to walking 1-2 miles daily (though still have a lot of weight to lose), and this little .75 mile loop kicked our butts good.
We were exhausted by the end of the hour (more advice: don’t ever go on a walk with us. We can never agree on which direction to go.) and headed home. We’ll find fireworks to view tonight.
