Beacon of health-care hope for Iowa start-up entrepreneurs
Posted on July 11, 2007 in Business news by DM
Back when I owned my freelance copywriting and graphic design business, health insurance for my family of three was around $500 a month. Because of that, we went without it - and fortunately, had no medical needs in the three years I ran the business. I can certainly understand why the unaffordability of health insurance would keep some folks from starting the business in the first place, since the cost has skyrocketed since then.
Today, Des Moines area business bloggers are commenting on a plan by a north central Iowa organization that’s offering to pay for health insurance for folks who start businesses in their area. I’ll add my “Wow - cool idea!” to the pile, and share some links with you:
First, the story itself:
The news release from PRNewswire.com
The AP story as picked up by the Houston Chronicle
And, here’s a little of the commentary by Des Moines-area bloggers:
Andy Brudtkuhl of Get a New Browser wishes for a similar program here in the Greater Des Moines region
Doug Mitchell over at Moments of Clarity comments and adds a link to the story as reported at Earthtimes.org
Would you launch your start-up if you knew your health insurance would be paid by a similar group in this region?

Thanks for the mention! Heck yeah this would remove about 12k/year /person of wages required X # of employees. Would not be a bad deal to have that monkey off my back.
Doug, glad you stopped in - this likely would’ve changed things in MY business (or for my family) too!
