I-235 completion celebration - save the date!

I 235 freeway graphicIn 1966, when I was four, my family purchased a home on Rollins Avenue just east of 63rd Street. I-235 was still under construction, and the home was a bargain because no one wanted to live across the street from the noise.

In fact, 235 ended at that time just past the 63rd Street bridge - I remember one day, probably before anything west of 42nd Street was open, my dad took us down to the new pavement that was inching toward the 8th St. West Des Moines off-ramp and let us ride our bicycles on it. The Police Department quickly put a stop to that.

Forty years later, we’re at the conclusion of a major re-design and re-construction of I-235. 2007 is the final project year, and the Iowa Department of Transportation is planning a ribbon cutting and community-wide reception to celebrate the conclusion of the project. More details will obviously be forthcoming, but for now, save the date!

October 18, 2007
3 p.m. : Ribbon Cutting – 5th Avenue Bridge
4-7 p.m. :  Reception – Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center

I-235 trivia: Did you know that I-235 is locally known as the MacVicar Freeway, and that it was named for two men - John MacVicar Sr. and John MacVicar Jr. - who both served as Des Moines mayors?
