Sales Tax Holiday just in time for back-to-school

Posted on July 16, 2007 in Around the metro, Business news, Holidays by DM

tax holiday graphicThe Iowa Sales Tax Holiday will be held Friday and Saturday, August 3-4, 2007 on clothing and footwear items priced $100 or less at retailers across the state.

The Iowa Department of Revenue states that businesses selling these goods must participate in the tax holiday, and may not advertise that they will pay or otherwise absorb the sales tax on items that don’t qualify. No sales tax, including school and local option sales taxes, will be collected on sales of an article of clothing or footwear having a selling price less than $100.00.

Sunday, August 5 is not part of the sales tax holiday.

This looks complicated to me. Stores could easily goof and get into trouble.

Coincidently, August 5 is the day of the Republican debate in Iowa. Maybe Ron Paul will talk about a federal tax holiday, a permanent holiday on federal income tax.

Thomas, although it sounds confusing, it’s actually been going on for several years. It would be interesting to know if any stores DO have trouble with it. Thanks for stopping by!
