Speaking of back to school…
Posted on July 16, 2007 in Personal thoughts, Schools & Neighborhoods by DM
Have you noticed that back-to-school supplies are on the shelves already? I am a lifelong school supply addict - pristine pencils and unrumpled notebook paper have always spoken loudly to me of the promise of yet-to-be-written essays, poems, and novels. In the 20 years since I’ve graduated from college, I’ve also discovered that one need not wait for this time of year to purchase supplies. A clean spiral notebook is a requirement for every new project or venture I undertake, and that sometimes means a midnight run to Walgreens. (The current crop of Pattern Play designs from U-Create is quite stylish and sophisticated, don’t you think?)
Alas, I am not - as many of my writer-brethren are - a connoisseur of fine writing instruments. I am, however, an enthusiastic consumer of budget pens and take great pleasure in finding a new Bic, Pilot or other everyday brand that has found a well-balanced combination of weight, ink and line. My current favorite is the Pilot Permaball Medium, and I think my original “favorite pen” was the Bic Banana Ink Crayon. (Could someone please bring those back? The Crayola fine-point felt-tips are a very poor substitute.)
I know a lot of you have kids - many of them school-age. Do you find yourself shopping gleefully for their school supplies, taking the opportunity to replenish your own stash?

YES!!! While I was at the store today I called my daughter and asked her to look up and print her school supply list because I was so excited to get started on it…especially because this is apparently the week where you can get NEW crayons for something like 9 cents, crisp new folders 10 for a dollar, etc. Her reply? “ALREADY?!@#” I guess it is a Mommy sickness - apparently not AS exciting for the kids - at least not the middle-school-aged ones. I’m so stocking up for the year though…seriously…is there anything better than BRAND-NEW crayons?!@# NO! I say, NO!
Ah the smell of a fresh box of 64 with built-in-sharpener! LOL
There are some parts of the Des Moines area which have free school supply give-aways during the latter part of summer. One of these is sponsored by the West Des Moines Department of Human Services. It is scheduled for the week of August 13-17 and will be held at the department’s offices, 318 5th Street in West Des Moines. While a wide variety of supplies (such as rulers, pencils and markers) are accepted, I was told that the most desired item will be backpacks.
Great info, Joel, thanks! If anyone’s aware of other similar drives, please feel free to mention them here. ~ J.
