Police department to step up prevention efforts in four neighborhoods

Posted on July 23, 2007 in Crime & Law Enforcement, Neighborhood News by DM

Update July 24: Here is the report from KCCI-TV about the Neighborhood Enforcement Strike Team (NEST) initiative, following the Police Department’s news conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Here’s an interesting item from the KCCI Noon News headlines (via email):

On Tuesday morning, the Des Moines Police Department said it plans to announce a strategy to crack down on crime in four troubled neighborhoods.
Those neighborhoods are Carpenter, River Bend, Drake and Sherman Hills. Police said there have been 82 weapons assaults, 18 shootings and three homicides in those neighborhoods since Jan. 1.
Des Moines police created a new task forced called the Neighborhood Enforcement Strike Team to focus on fighting crime in those areas. That team consists of 14 officers.

I checked the DMPD and City of Des Moines websites for a news release, but nothing so far. More details to come tomorrow, says KCCI.

Justin, thanks for reading and commenting! Your goal is an admirable one - be sure to look into opportunities with the PD’s cadet program, as I think it’s a great way to get acclimated to the law enforcement mindset and also a great way to get a foothold in a law enforcement career. In fact, I believe our new chief, Judy Bradshaw, started out as a Des Moines police cadet and worked her way up! I’m certain there are lots of officers on the force who likewise started as cadets. Good luck to you - and thanks for being part of the discussion here! ~ DM/Janet
