2007 Iowa State Fair visit: lots of “oooo’s and awwww’s”
Posted on August 18, 2007 in Events, Pets & Animals by DM
Well the 2007 State Fair is coming to a close, and we managed to make our visit on one of the nicest possible days, weather-wise. We had a really nice time - we got there around 9 a.m., and the first part of our day was spent doing a semi-organized scavenger hunt as part of the “summer staff outing” for my place of employment. That was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be, working in teams to take pictures of various sights and activities. By noon that part of the day was over and we were free to explore the rest of the Fair on our own.
One of the new activities this year is the Animal Education Center, which is a large new building just to the northeast of the Old Mill ride. It houses farm animals that are ready to give birth, and visitors can watch the births, handle the newborns, and see movies of births from the past few days. We got to hold a day-old piglet!! Silly as this sounds, it was really a highlight for me… I’m a city girl and always have been… so farm animals are really something different. Lots of the newborn piglets were really noisy, but the one we held was just like a sleepy little puppy. We also watched a woman who was hatching chicks from their eggs, carefully peeling off bits of shell and putting the new chicks into a warmer. And there was an ewe that had just given birth to a lamb about an hour before we got there - she was still cleaning him up, and he was standing on wobbly legs, when we arrived.
We also toured the photography exhibit - one of our favorite Fair displays - and the Avenue of Breeds where you can see lots of different types of animals all in the same barn. We also walked through the Midway, but this year our daughter chose not to ride anything so we saved a bunch of money there. And of course we ate lots of good (bad) junk food, but we also walked about four miles so hopefully we wore off a few of the calories from that.
We left around 2:30 p.m., took the shuttle back to our car at the Capitol (THAT is the way to go as far as parking!)… and were home by 3:30. A few of my favorite pictures are shown here, but I posted all of them in a Webshots album so you can take a look. Pretty standard “Fair fare” - LOL - but, we had a great day together!

GREAT photos!!!! Thanks to you and PBS….all I’m missing out on is the corn dog this year. =-)
Hey I did really well, I only ate ONE corn-dog, and not much else. My poor hubby has been eating nothing but various kinds of grilled-chicken salads for the past few months, and he kinda fell off the food wagon. LOL temporary set-back, he’s back to salads today! ~ J.

You met Piglet? How about Pooh, Eeyore, Christopher Robin, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo and Tigger too? (lol)
Cute! LOL I’m pretty sure we saw Rabbit and Eeyore in the Avenue of Breeds!
There you go again… another great post!
