Five Questions With… Sherry Borzo
Posted on August 20, 2007 in Five Questions by DM
Five Questions With… is a weekly series on DMweblife highlighting Des Moines area bloggers and their blogs! This edition features Sherry Borzo of dsmBUZZ.com, a website that’s devoted to encouraging people to shop with locally owned and operated businesses.
1. What’s the focus of your blog?
The primary purpose of dsmBUZZ is to encourage consumers to buy locally owned here in central Iowa. I really enjoy the stories and thoughts of entrepreneurs and sharing the great businesses that are available here. In my blog, I share a lot about those topics and also my own trials and triumphs of owning a small business.
2. What aspect of blogging do you enjoy the most?
I love all this incredible information that is available to anyone who wants to tap into it on the web. It is great that people can share their knowledge and thoughts and we can all benefit. I love the democracy of information shared this way.
3. What’s an activity besides blogging that you can’t live without?
Going out to eat and visit with friends and family. I particularly enjoy coffee and breakfast, although a great dinner with a good cabernet is very fine also.
4. What’s the best advice - personal or professional - you’ve ever received?
I’ve received so much great information from friends and family, books, tapes and blogs. These days though, I think the best tip has been to recognize that my emotions don’t define me. I can ride ups and downs and know that feeling discouraged for example is just a feeling that will pass. This makes it easier to persevere and focus on my goals.
5. What’s something you’ve accomplished in the past five years that you are particularly proud of?
I always proud of my family and friends. These days I’m particularly proud of a book that my Mom and I just completed that will be launched on September 16. The book is about our unique mother daughter relationship and is called “Under the Tea Leaves. A mother daughter journey over tea.”
And the Secret Sixth Question I asked Sherry:
Tell a little more about your upcoming book: was it challenging to work with your mother on a collaborative project like this, and, what specifically made you look at each other and say, “We should write a book” - and then do it?
The inspiration for the book seemed to initially be about visiting and appraising the tearooms around the state. These frilly places are often the primary domain of ladies and their female camaraderie. However, as we got to writing and traveling, Mom and I spent a great deal of time talking about our adult mother daughter relationship and our unusual beginnings as mother and daughter. Interestingly, it seems like mothers of young children often feel compelled to talk about the subjects that have taken hold of their every waking hour and so there is a lot of material on that theme. The dialogue about the adult child and parent relationship is less robust. We realized we were touching on themes and areas that would probably resonate with many people and wanted to share our journey and open up the flood gates of others to talk about their experiences.
Des Moines-area bloggers: to be considered for this feature, just drop me an email with your name, location, and blog address, and answers to the five questions I’ve asked here. I’ll reply with your “Secret Sixth Question”!
