First day of school in Des Moines: new year, new habits… for parents!

Posted on August 23, 2007 in Parenthood, Schools & Education by DM

School started today in the Des Moines district and my daughter went off to her first day of 8th grade looking very girly - quite a departure from last year’s t-shirt-and-jeans uniform - and very grown-up.

She’s enrolled in a half-day program at Central Academy, where she will be taking 12th grade civics (government), beginning Chemistry/Physics, and Honors English, all for high school credit. This is in addition to her Advanced Science and 9th grade math at her middle school.

Academically, I have no doubt she will be able to do the work. The part that scares the crap out of me is the time management that will be required to get it all done. And I don’t just mean her time management.

After attending a parents’ orientation at Central Academy on Tuesday night, it’s quite clear that our family’s weeknights will be centered around providing ample time and study space for DD to get her homework done. That means passing on the MASH and Scrubs back-to-back re-runs, eating at home more often instead of taking 90 minutes to go out for dinner (which is way too expensive anyway), and eliminating non-critical weeknight forays such as the occasional trips to Barnes & Noble… all of which we’ll likely be saving up now for the weekends.

I’m scared for us. Really, you have no idea.
