Move WWI memorial to Capitol monument grounds
Posted on August 23, 2007 in Around the metro by DM
I’m not surprised to see Gerlad LaBlanc at the helm of the efforts to restore the WWI monument near Iowa Lutheran Hospital. He has been leading these kinds of efforts around Greater Des Moines for many years, including a tombstone restoration project at Woodland Cemetery a few years ago and many others. Now that Polk County has taken responsibility for the maintenance of this monument, I would like to see them consider moving it to the State Capitol Grounds where it might enjoy higher visitorship.

I agree. It seems that the first World War has been all but forgotten. If I’m not mistaken, there’s no memorial to it in Washington DC, in fact. (There is one in Kansas City, Missouri, however.) Hats off to LeBlanc and the others for their efforts in restoring a monument to those who fell in that conflict.
