Jonathan Narcisse has a lot to prove on School Board

Posted on September 13, 2007 in Schools & Education by DM

I understand Marc Hansen’s balancing act over Jonathan Narcisse today. I’m conflicted over Narcisse’s election to the school board - I’m all for something different, but I’m not sure Narcisse is the guy.

I don’t have a lot of specifics, but it seems that whenever I hear about him in the news it’s often something divisive.  During the last school board election cycle, for example, Narcisse lost by a small margin and demanded a recount - voters who would’ve supported him could not get to the polls, he claimed, while other precincts stayed open late to allow more anti-Narcisse voters to cast their ballots.  I think that was a bit “out there” and smacked of non-existant conspiracy theories. But, I recognize that it’s possible that he and I just do not share a lot of political opinions, so what feels divisive to me might just be him expressing concern over the issues that matter to him and being vocal in his opinions.

I do think that the Des Moines School Board needs someone who is willing to speak up against the status quo, question their methods, question expenditures, and generally be that person who calls attention when things don’t make sense.  You know, like George Flagg used to do for our City Council.
