Republican Caucuses moved to January 3, 2008

Posted on October 16, 2007 in Iowa Caucuses, Politics by DM

The Republican Party of Iowa has officially moved its caucuses to January 3, 2008. The Democratic Caucuses remain on January 14. I don’t know how this will affect the media reporting center that the two parties were planning to share; I do think the Iowa GOP is going to have its work cut out for it as far as generating turn-out so soon after New Year’s Day.

Are you a caucus-goer? What do you think about the earlier date?

It’s probably for this year, but at the risk of offending more than a few Iowans (who are probably spoiled by all the nationwide attention), I say the maze of caucuses and primaries should be scrapped altogether and replaced with one nationwide primary, held five months before the general elections. The process of selecting the candidates has been going on for way too long.

Moreover, are Iowa and New Hampshire are truly representative of the United States? If the electoral process were to include some early states which truly represented the United States, it would include Florida, New York, California, Kansas, Montana as well as Iowa and New Hampshire.

Joel, I kind of like the idea of a national primary - one of the problems with states “going first” is some candidates drop out if they don’t do well in those states, so the rest of the country doesn’t get to vote for those candidates if they wanted to.
