Directional sidewalk medallions: way-finding helpers for downtown?
Posted on October 23, 2007 in Downtown, Shorties, Transportation by DM
WOW - these directional sidewalk medallions are a really cool idea… I realize we don’t have people coming up out of subway stations, but I’ll bet some of our busier pedestrian-trafficked intersections (or major bus stops?) could use something like this to point the way after stepping off the bus or approaching the crosswalk! They’re very distinctive and could be used in conjunction with some of the “way-finding signage” that’s in use downtown.
Incidentally, the medallions were implemented in New York City after being suggested by a citizen who took advantage of an “advise the Mayor” program. I note that our City Manager, Rick Clark, has occasionally set up “coffee with the Manager”-types of events. I wonder if any similar big ideas have come from those sessions?

Sure would have loved NYC to have these when we were there and got off the Subway in an area we had no business being in. Walking away from the park, we thought we were heading west. Nope, we were actually going north, deeper into some scary territory.
Kelly, I got turned around too in NYC back in 1981 - of course, not knowing where we were *supposed* to be going in the first place, I’m not sure these medallions would’ve helped us! LOL What an adventure! ~ Janet
