North High seniors work hard, strive for college

Although North High had a tough year in football (bright spot: victory against Hoover!), the point tally doesn’t even begin to tell the story of how hard these kids have worked, athletically and academically. Our daughter had the opportunity to play with the North High Marching Band on Friday Night, so we trekked over to John R. Grubb Stadium to watch the Polar Bears take on the East High Scarlets. Turns out it was also Senior Night, in which the senior cheerleaders, football players and marching band members were introduced to the fans and their high school accomplishments were noted. (Video of the kids playing the North High Fight Song.)
What impressed me the most was the level of engagement of the students in their high school experience. Despite North’s poor football record, despite its ACT average in comparison to other area schools, and despite the economic challenges many North families face, the fact is these kids have worked their butts off. Every student who was introduced had participated in a long list of activities, and most of them had plans for college. As a person who graduated from Roosevelt with a nice GPA but a pathetically short list of extra-curriculars, I was humbled by the initiative shown by North’s hard-working seniors. I congratulate them - and I look forward to future opportunities to support the Polar Bears!
