Bits and pieces

The Des Moines City Council election is tomorrow. I got mailers over the weekend from Chris Coleman and Frank Cownie, and there was what I would call a puff piece in the Register about Cownie’s opponent. (Link unavailable on Register site, for some reason.) Don’t forget to vote!

In case you missed it, the Holiday Season has officially begun. The Halloween candy is gone, the Christmas merchandise has exploded onto retailer’s shelves, the “hot toys” lists have begun circulating, and the television commercials have started. November will be a busy month, but I am determined not to let my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, sneak up on me this year.

And a question: does anyone know the specific purpose and/or use of the “fishing house” that sits out over Lake Ahquabi? It’s a little cabin on a floating platform… I walked in expecting a regular shelter or cabin (possibly selling bait or something), but instead it’s an enclosed fishing deck with a cutaway section in the middle of the floor that goes down into the lake. Is this an ice-fishing alternative? Is it used specifically in a particular season? Or is it just a place to fish when it’s raining?

On one memorable bit, the Bob & Tom show people suggested getting a kid a cardboard box. That kid can have lots of fun with it. It can spur lots of imagination. It can be recycled. And if it’s clean, it might be non-toxic (of course, the parent or other person would have to be sure).

That’s not so far off, Joel - sometimes I think too much attention is paid to “must-have toys,” when we should perhaps be emphasizing imagination instead. ~ Janet
