US Mayors coming to Iowa to lobby candidates

republican and democrat logoThis is an interesting idea, but I’m not sure how it’s going to play out: The US Conference of Mayors (USCM) issued a news release on Thursday stating that they are coming to Iowa in early December to present their legislative agenda to the Presidential candidates prior to the Iowa Caucuses.

“We believe that the issues of Iowa and the city of Des Moines are the same issues that face mayors each and every day,” said USCM Executive Director Tom Cochran. “For the first time in our history, The United States Conference of Mayors is bringing a bipartisan group of mayors to the Iowa Caucuses.”

Now here’s the problem: the group is coming to Iowa December 1; the caucuses are on January 3. So they’re not really coming to the Caucuses. And, unless they’re holding some sort of event to which all the candidates are invited and have confirmed, I’m not sure how they’re going to present their agenda to the candidates. (The Iowa Brown-Black Forum is scheduled for December 1 beginning at 6 p.m.; maybe they plan to tie in to that event somehow, but that’s just for Democrats.)

I’m not sure what other groups have organized trips to Iowa to present information to the candidates, but one thing’s for sure: if you want to reach a clot of candidates a month before the Caucuses, it’s a good bet you’ll find them roaming around Iowa.
