Sixteen good ones I wouldn’t trade for anything
Last Friday was our 16th wedding anniversary. We celebrated with a nice dinner out at The Big Steer in Altoona and then drinks with friends.
Our wedding in 1991 was a very casual event - we were married and had our reception in the clubhouse of a local apartment complex, with music by a local DJ [...]

Did “new media” help or hurt local elections?
Sean over at The Garden City (Newton, MA community blog) posted a quick note about whether “new media” (meaning blogs, websites, etc.) played a part in their local alderman elections this year. He notes that their oldest candidate, an incumbent, won without a website or even an email address, while community leader Jeff Siedeman had [...]
US Mayors coming to Iowa to lobby candidates
This is an interesting idea, but I’m not sure how it’s going to play out: The US Conference of Mayors (USCM) issued a news release on Thursday stating that they are coming to Iowa in early December to present their legislative agenda to the Presidential candidates prior to the Iowa Caucuses.
“We believe that the issues of Iowa and [...]

We attended a program at Harding Middle School Monday night (11/5) which launched (ha) the school’s participation in the NASA Explorer Schools program. Retired astronaut John Bennett Harrington gave a stunning multimedia presentation about his life-journey through public school, college and the US Navy/NASA. The program is a NASA effort to encourage math, science and [...]

Snow is President Bush’s former White House Press Secretary and, prior to that, was host of a news analysis program on FoxNews. In his remarks, Snow links declining newspaper, television and cable [...]

Bits and pieces
The Des Moines City Council election is tomorrow. I got mailers over the weekend from Chris Coleman and Frank Cownie, and there was what I would call a puff piece in the Register about Cownie’s opponent. (Link unavailable on Register site, for some reason.) Don’t forget to vote!
In case you missed it, the Holiday Season [...]
Ink-jet medicine will take us to painless tattoos
Here’s an interesting tidbit from the customer newsletter of a local commercial print shop:
“Using ink-jet printing technology, Hewlett-Packard has developed a patch covered with microneedles that painlessly penetrates the skin. Arrayed above the microneedles are wells that contain one or more drugs, along with a miniature “firing” device. The technology… is expected to be commercially [...]
