This New Year’s Eve, The Square in Indianola offers games, giveaways and activities all leading up to the Raising of the Square Ball at midnight!

Michelle Fetters Steen, organizer of the family-friendly event since it began in 1999, said festivities are from 10 p.m. til Midnight on the southwest corner of The Square. Activities will include:

Ice sculpture demonstration
Soccer equipment for playing “soccer hockey” in the street
“Team toboggans” (boards that teams of people can stand on and guide/walk using ropes)
Hot beverages (the family-friendly kind!) for sale at The Corner Sundry
Iowa Stars ticket giveaways
And of course, the countdown to 2008 and the Raising of the Square Ball

Michelle tells a fun story, too, about how the event got started - seems her then-college-age son Adam wanted to visit Times Square for New Year’s Eve 1999, and younger sister Hannah thought it was unfair that she was too young to go too. So Mom decided to stage an event in the local square, complete with giant mirrored ball and the millenium countdown clock from the Indianola Post Office.

“The estimate was that 800-1,000 people showed up that night. And we’ve done something every year since,” Michelle told DMweblife.
