I’m a basketball mom!

basketball team and coach imageLike most Iowans, I’ve grown up watching the state high school basketball tournaments and just generally being aware of how important they are to the schools, the communities, and to the state as a whole. So this week, because I live in a state where high school basketball is a really big deal, I took special joy in watching my 8th grade daughter play in her very first girl’s basketball game.

Make no mistake, the kids have a long way to go in their skill- and team-development. Still, I don’t know how to describe it - but it was at least exciting, if nothing else, watching her charge up and down the court in a real uniform, knowing she was trying to get a handle on the game, nervous playing in front of her classmates, and hopefully having fun, in a sport that could lead to the experience of going to State, getting a college scholarship, and truly learning what it means to be part of a team.

And maybe I was happy for her because I know that the other kids in school look up at least a little to the kids in the sports uniforms, and I knew she was getting a little of that respect.

Guess it doesn’t matter - it was a blast watching her play the game, even if they did get whomped. (Okay, so the EnV phone isn’t the best for far-away pictures… my girl is #43 though… and yes, she’s in both these pictures!)
