Summer vacations revisited

single digit temperature graphHey remember the link round-up I did last summer collecting up a bunch of your summer vacation blog posts? Now that we are firmly entrenched in the deep freeze I thought it might be fun to see what everyone was up to back when it was 80+ degrees hotter than it is now.

Joel - have you learned to ski yet? : )

Thanks for asking me. If all goes well–and I often think that might be a big IF–I should be headed out to Steamboat Springs to learn to ski this week.

Just got back from Steamboat Springs. Had a great time!!!!!! I learned the basics of skiing, and my instructor took me down some of the intermediate runs, along with a run that ran between two stands of pine trees (I kept aiming for the snowdrifts–remember Sonny Bono?). I also learned how to get on the chairlift–it’s much harder to do with skis than to get on the ones at the state fairgrounds or at Adventureland with regular shoes.

I also learned the techniques of cross-country skiing–skiing while pushing with one ski and with both poles, for example, along with making a pie-shaped wedge to stop. I explored the trails on Howelsen Hill and the Steamboat ski resort mountain on snowshoes. Last, but not least, I went horseback riding at a ranch to the north of town and went dog-sledding at another ranch. I’m planning to repeat the experience next year–perhaps at another resort in Colorado or Utah.

Joel, that’s great! Glad you could get out of here for awhile - glad SOMEONE could get out of here for awhile… sounds like you learned some new skills and had a great time. I’ve been to Colorado but only in the summer - we took the motorcycle over to Rocky Mtn. National Park, Estes Park, Leadville, and Colorado Springs back in 1988… now that I ride my own I’d love to go back! It’s a beautiful area… congrats on a great vacation! ~ Janet
