Meet the Artists of HeArt Fest: Rachel Sims
Posted on January 29, 2008 in Art & Artists by DM
Rachel Sims is a 26-year-old jeweler and beadmaker, working primarily in silver and glass. She uses a beadmaking process called lampworking, which consists of melting a ’soft’ glass over a torch, winding it on to a ‘clay’ coated steel rod called a mandrel, and manipulating with metal tools.
For the past six months she has been Artist in Residence for the Corning Center for the Fine Arts in Corning, Iowa. In addition to being a full time artist she also assists in the gallery, teaches classes, and helps cater on the side. She has been heavily involved with the arts world since her teen-age years, which led to studying at the Rhode Island School of Design to become a metalsmith. She completed her Master’s in luxury accessory design in Milan, Italy, then took an internship and, ultimately, a job in Geneva Switzerland designing luxury watches. She left this position to return to the U.S. in July, 2007.
“Although I had amazing experiences abroad I am enjoying being back ‘home’ and following my dream,” Rachel said.
She notes that although this is her first time participating in the HeArt Fest, the show comes highly recommended from artist friends. She is currently selling her work at the Corning Center for the Fine Arts and the Des Moines Art Center gift shop.
HeArt Fest is a juried art show featuring affordable hand-crafted works of fine art. It will be held February 9-10 at Valley West Mall. Complete information here.

I know Rachel and her family. While I have never seen her craft with my own eyes, I have been watching her grow and mature as a person for many years. If her art is as beautiful as her heart, and I have no reason to doubt that it is, it would be astonishing. Please tell her I said hello.
