Photogenic East Side locations?
Posted on October 23, 2008 in Around the metro by DM
I’m in need of ideas for scenic/iconic views of the East side of Des Moines for a potential photo/virtual tour shoot. The obvious choices are the Capitol, East Village, AE Dairy Cows, state fairgrounds… but, what else? Chinese garden and/or Jim Muto Recreation Area along riverfront? Thompson Ave. residential area east of E. 14th? That giant white Victorian house on Penn Ave.? Your ideas welcome - and please, no snarky comments about cars parked in front yards, etc. - LOL… I really do need helpful suggestions here!

Union Park, Carousel, there’s some nice homes along E. 9th across the street from Union Park.
I know there’s some spots along Four Mile Creek on that bike trail that is by it.
Hope that helps.

UNION PARK - of course! Gads, and right up the street from our old house. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it… THANKS, Shane!

I don’t know if this counts as being on the East Side, but how about Fort Des Moines County Park (at SE 5th Street)? There is a beautiful lake and some great woodlands.
NOTE: If you care to go go with the Fort Des Moines County Park, you might have to catch it ASAP or wait until after the work on the adjoining Blank Park Zoo is done. Who knows what will happen to the park with the zoo construction?
Another couple of ideas, in the same area are Ewing Park and Easter Lake. Ewing Park is where the lilacs bloom in spring–around Mother’s Day and is where the soapbox derby races have been held (if my memory is up-to-date). I have heard that Easter Lake is filled in with silt, but it has an old covered bridge on one end.
Janet: A couple of places we’ve used: Near the Supreme Court building. A great overview of the city from the east side. Makes for great morning shots (near the peace bell)
How about the State Fair Grounds, lots of neat places. And, we see you already have the Union Park site.
