Tom Bedell retires from Pure Fishing
Tom Bedell’s official retirement from Pure Fishing, the company founded by his father, gave me a moment of pause this week. I met Tom and his parents in 2005 while producing a biographical video for the Iowa Business Hall of Fame, and the story of Pure Fishing is surely one of Iowa’s most endearing business [...]
Steve & Barry’s, East Village Books open this week; East Village Market, Maytag closing
Steve & Barry’s, a discount clothing store where everything costs under $20, opened at the west end of Southridge Mall this morning. I think the mall is pinning some hopes on this store. (The mall has free wi-fi, too!)
And, East Village Books opens at 5 p.m. Friday at 510 East Locust St. Opening day festivities [...]
Beggar’s Banquet closing, East Village Books opening
The Business Record Daily, an email publication, reports today that Beggars Banquet will be closing at 1301 Locust later this month. They will be missed!
At the other end of downtown, the East Village Books website says the store opens in October. I’m anxiously awaiting news on that!

The Spirit of Des Moines Dinner boat will cruise again

If you’ve lived here long enough, you might recall that the Spirit met an untimely end when a drunken woman untied it from its moorings one night and set it afloat. [...]

The Iowa Department of Revenue states that businesses selling these goods must participate in the tax holiday, and may not advertise that they will pay or otherwise absorb [...]
Kitchen Collage encourages picnics
Once again I’m just so delighted at the email newsletter produced by the folks at East Village’s Kitchen Collage. Teresa & Molly really understand how to produce an email that I, for one, want to read - and that I look forward to receiving.
I wish this thing was available online as a webpage so I [...]
Beacon of health-care hope for Iowa start-up entrepreneurs
Back when I owned my freelance copywriting and graphic design business, health insurance for my family of three was around $500 a month. Because of that, we went without it - and fortunately, had no medical needs in the three years I ran the business. I can certainly understand why the unaffordability of health insurance [...]

The Des Moines Register reports that low-priced fashion retailer Steve & Barry’s is coming to Southridge Mall this fall, just in time for budget back-to-school shopping. S&B carries items retailing under $20 and includes men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories. Its primary women’s line is called Bitten, by actress Sarah Jessica Parker.
