Brooks pleads guilty; what is the cost?
I was reading about former City Councilman Archie Brooks’s newly minted guilty plea, and a few folks on the Register’s website were commenting about how he had done a lot of good for the community over the years. They were rebutted immediately by those who believed that Brooks’s apparent breaches of the public trust far [...]
Coleman wins Des Moines City Council primary
Here are the results of Tuesday’s City Council primary election:
Chris Coleman (incumbent): 67.4 %
Josh Daines: 23.1%
Seth Galinsky: 8.5%
Write-In: 1%
The Polk County election office website showed that 3,566 people voted.
Update:
While Chris Coleman easily won two thirds of the votes cast in yesterday’s city council primary election, I have to wonder if the primary wasn’t a waste [...]
Des Moines City Council primary election is Tuesday, Oct. 9
Tomorrow is primary election day for voters in Des Moines, who must select the candidates for an at-large city council seat. Contending are incumbent Chris Coleman, marketing consultant Josh Daines, and meatcutter Seth Galinsky. The Register has posted this “primer,” a snapshot-look at each candidate including answers to four questions (selected, one assumes, by the [...]
Brad Olson arrested, bonded out
This whole situation with West Des Moines city councilman Brad Olson is just too odd for words. The shoplifted prescriptions were a misunderstanding, the stolen truck was a paperwork mistake… there just seems to be a lot of “oh that, that wasn’t my fault” with this case, in addition to all the odd behavior like [...]
DMPD’s NEST program is making a difference
Remember the post about the Des Moines Police Department’s NEST program, designed to crack down on crime in four Des Moines neighborhoods? By all accounts it’s making a big difference. That’s great news, but I’m curious about one thing: why would police say it’s unlikely that the program would be come permanent, when it’s having [...]
Cardboard kids force traffic to slow down
Despite the fact that the speed limit on our street is 25 mph, we daily see cars zooming from one end to the other at speeds in excess of 60 mph. We call the police, they run radar for a couple days, and when they leave the problem returns. A two-way stop sign placed at [...]
City wants to make Des Moines streets better for bicyclists
An article in the Friday Register outlines Des Moines’ efforts to become designated as a “Bicycle Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists in 2008.
Generally speaking, a bike- friendly community is one where safety is paramount and where strong encouragement is given to bikers to participate in both commuter and recreational travel… Des Moines [...]
Privatize public-run recreation facilities?
I like Polk County’s plan to privatize the operation of Jester Park Golf Course. According to reports, the $84,000 the county will receive from their selected course management company is more than the course earned for the County last year - and the revenues have been on the decline. So it seems that perhaps the County is [...]
