Notes from the week
Okay, two things: first, this snowman (penguin?) is SO awesome!! It’s not a trick of perspective, it’s nearly as tall as the house! He’s located on E. 9th Street, just north of University on Des Moines’ east side. While I can certainly imagine having the big idea to build something like this, I can’t imagine [...]
What is marketing? (I’m not sure why I’m blogging about this.)
If I may don my old marketing blogger hat for a moment, this struck me as interesting:
According to Press On, the customer newsletter of Edwards Graphic Arts, “(The) American Marketing Asssociation reviews and, when appropriate, redefines ‘marketing’ every five years. Its recently-published revised definition: ‘Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for [...]
DMweblife merchandise now available
Okay, some time ago I created a little online store over at Cafepress using the DMweblife logo. I then purchased the “value t-shirt” to test out the quality, and I’m pleased to report that the shirt still looks good after about six months of wearing and washing.
So - I’ve decided it’s finally okay to direct [...]
A few stray thoughts
This news item about sidewalk recycling bins in Kansas City got me thinking about the same idea here in Des Moines. But then I wondered - would the bins be used for returnables like pop cans, for those who don’t make the effort to get their nickels back? And if so, does the bin design [...]
Save the Ta-ta’s - men support breast cancer research too!
I wish I’d snapped a picture, but I was driving. I pulled up to an intersection today on my way to work and ended up behind a large manly-looking black pickup truck with camouflage decals on the tailgate. Also on the tailgate was a small oval-shaped bumper sticker. It was white, had a pink breast-cancer [...]
Odds and ends
Reunited…
Guess I’m a sucker for a good piece of technology. I went and paid for a second LG enV cellphone over the weekend, to replace the one I lost on Christmas Eve (after owning it less than a week). This photo of my friend’s dog gives you an idea of how good the camera is [...]
‘Age of Conversation’ update: $11,000 raised for Variety
Earlier this year, when I was blogging over at www.marketingideablog.com, I was fortunate to participate in a multi-author, blog-to-bookshelf project called “The Age of Conversation.” The book was a fund-raiser for Variety - The Children’s Charity. So far, $11,000 has been raised and donated, with the book still for sale in e- and soft-cover formats. [...]
Bits and pieces
The Des Moines City Council election is tomorrow. I got mailers over the weekend from Chris Coleman and Frank Cownie, and there was what I would call a puff piece in the Register about Cownie’s opponent. (Link unavailable on Register site, for some reason.) Don’t forget to vote!
In case you missed it, the Holiday Season [...]
Dog bites man, that’s not news…
In my earliest journalism courses in high school and college, we learned a humorous little tidbit that was designed to teach us how to spot what was newsworthy. “Dog bites man, that’s not news,” reportedly said some famous long-ago newspaperman (probably HL Mencken or someone like that), “…but man bites dog, now THAT’S news!”
Man shoots [...]
Directional sidewalk medallions: way-finding helpers for downtown?
WOW - these directional sidewalk medallions are a really cool idea… I realize we don’t have people coming up out of subway stations, but I’ll bet some of our busier pedestrian-trafficked intersections (or major bus stops?) could use something like this to point the way after stepping off the bus or approaching the crosswalk! They’re very [...]
